Projects / Transdisciplinaire Maakprocessen

(transdisciplinary creation processes)

Transdisciplinaire Maakprocessen is a RAAK Publiek-sponsored project in which Theatre Studies at Utrecht University participates with V2-Institute for Instable Media, YO! Opera, Huis aan de Werf, Utrecht School of the Arts (Faculteit Theater, Lectoraat Theatrale maakprocessen), the Hogeschool Utrecht (Faculteit Communicatie en Journalistiek) and the Domein voor de Kunstkritiek.

The aim of the project is to facilitate reflection and to circulate knowledge about types of theatre and performance that transgress the conventional categories that underlie modes of description, interpretation and evaluation. New hybrids of performance not only combine elements from different artistic disciplines (theatre, dance, music, film, new media, the arts) but also establish connections with non-artistic domains like science and technology. This new work presents a challenge to the audience (who often find themselves in the position of participant rather than spectator or observer) and also to the artists themselves (having to reconsider and negotiate their position within the artistic field), critics and curators (facing work that demands new modes of writing and evaluating), teachers (having to rethink how to train young people to become artists) and policy makers (having to decide which work deserves support and why).
