U-THEATER STUDIO T - BLACK BOX THEATRE
This theatre is situated right in the centre of Utrecht. It is a black box theatre, professionally equipped, and supervised by two all- round technicians. Studio T is intensively used for staging experiments as research in practice. These productions are programmed within the BA curriculum or are related to it.
Along with the theatre program video viewings are held of student productions, as well as seminars that have connections to theatre, film and new media studies.
Apart from the Department of Media and Culture Studies and two production offices (PBT/theatre and PBV/video) Studio T is used for productions of student unions like AKT (Theatre-, Film- and Television) and SUDS (English language and culture studies).
PBT PRODUCTION PLATFORM
As a production platform PBT offers students in-house theatre practice as an opportunity for learning by doing: students can test their theoretical insight on real-life projects. These practical experiments are related to the curriculum. Performances take place in Studio T, our black box theatre, often followed by talkbacks or other types of reception analysis.
Students learn to devise their own theatre project, gaining a clearer view of writing, directing and dramaturgy, and researching their scholarly medium in a creative way. They reflect on their creative process, relating theory to praxis and praxis to theory. These activities enrich the student’s perspective, as the practical experience generated is indispensable for their career as a theatre professional.
PBT offers dramaturgical and organisational advice and coaching, providing all necessary practical conditions. The members of PBT are advanced students in theatre studies with ample theatre experience, supervised by a lecturer. PBT also organizes special workshops, guest performances and exchange programs. For special projects PBT cooperates with other organisations like PBV and AKT.
