Eugene van Erven / Research

Eugene is currently engaged in long-term, world-wide research on community art. In the Netherlands he has developed a database of ongoing projects: www.communityartdatabase.nl. In 2005 he established the Community Art Lab together with former theatre academy director RienSprenger. In September 2010 its spin-off, the Community Art Lab-XL, received a 600,000 Euro grant to expand its work nationally. Meanwhile, Eugene continues his involvement in the Community Art Lab Utrecht, which is preparing a retrospective book on its work since 2005 and an artist-in-residence program for the upcoming celebration of 300 years Treaty of Utrecht, in June 2013.

In terms of his research, Eugene engages in audiovisual documentation of artistic processes, intervision exchanges between artists, and he links this field work to theoretical queries about 'authenticity', 'representation', 'inter- and intraculturality', social impact, ethics and aesthetical quality, which includes the status of community art in the art world.
