Eugene van Erven / Research

Eugene is currently engaged in long-term, world-wide research on community art. In the Netherlands he is developing a database of ongoing projects, from which a handful are picked each year for more in-depth documentation and analysis. For this purpose, he uses audiovisual recording devices, intervision exchanges between artists, and also links this field work to theoretical queries about 'authenticity', 'representation', 'inter- and intraculturality', social impact, ethics and aesthetical quality, which includes the status of community art in the art world. Some of the projects he is engaged in at the moment are:

• Living With Differences, a Utrecht-based project involving four young theatre makers working in neighbourhoods

• Expedition New-West, a multi-disciplinary community art project in the western suburbs of Amsterdam

• The Story Kitchen, a year-long project in Haarlem by former Dogtroep artistic director Titia Bouwmeester

• A youth project on radicalization in the southern city of Eindhoven.
